Started off with one spot but I think she bites at night and now there is 3 and they are getting worse and worse. Her food hasn't changed since day 1 and I ordered fish oil to put in her food 2 days ago to see if that makes a difference but it hasn't been long enough and I also have been applying coconut oil to the spots.
It sounds like your Labrador is experiencing significant discomfort due to her skin issues. The excessive itching, redness, hair loss, and flaky skin can stem from various causes, such as allergies, infections (whether bacterial, fungal, or parasitic), or even underlying health conditions.
Given that these symptoms have persisted for 10 days and are worsening, there are a few steps you can take at home to help manage her condition:
First, to prevent further irritation, consider using an Elizabethan collar (cone). This will stop her from biting or scratching the affected areas, which can make the problem worse.
Next, you can continue applying coconut oil to soothe her skin. However, if you notice any worsening of her condition, it might be best to stop and consult with a veterinarian.
In terms of dietary supplements, fish oil can be beneficial for skin health. While it may take a few weeks to see any improvement, continuing with the fish oil can help reduce inflammation and improve her skin condition over time.
For bathing, use a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo designed specifically for dogs. This can help remove allergens and soothe her skin. Be cautious not to over-bathe her, as this can dry out her skin further.
Given her age and the presence of other symptoms like vomiting and loss of appetite, it's crucial to monitor her closely. These additional symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires professional attention.
If her condition continues to worsen or if you notice any signs of severe discomfort, it would be best to consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible. They can perform tests to determine the exact cause of her skin issues and provide appropriate treatment.
