My cavapoo just had a litter of puppies, the runt has a terrible underbite, that affects his nursing we are syringe feeding him. But it was brought to my attention that even worse, he was born with his eyes open!!! I think I was just soo concerned with how he wud do with feeding with an underbite that I didn’t really think twice about it! I looked it up and it could mean they are blind. He is already 4 days old. What can I do!?!?!?
It sounds like you have quite a bit on your hands with the new litter, especially with the runt facing some unique challenges. It's wonderful that you're syringe feeding him to ensure he gets the nutrition he needs despite his underbite.
Regarding the puppy being born with its eyes open, this is indeed unusual. Typically, puppies' eyes open around 10-14 days after birth. If a puppy is born with its eyes open, it can sometimes indicate developmental issues, but it doesn't necessarily mean the puppy is blind.
Here are some steps you can take to care for the puppy:
First, gently clean the puppy's eyes with a warm, damp cloth to prevent any potential infections. Be very gentle to avoid causing any damage.
Next, monitor for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge from the eyes. If you notice any of these signs, it could indicate an infection that needs prompt attention.
Since the eyes are exposed earlier than usual, make sure the environment is clean and free from irritants. Avoid bright lights and ensure the puppy is in a safe, warm, and clean area.
Continue with the syringe feeding to ensure the puppy is getting enough nutrition. Make sure the puppy is gaining weight and staying hydrated.
Observe the puppy's behavior for any signs that it might be having trouble seeing, such as bumping into objects or not reacting to visual stimuli. However, keep in mind that very young puppies don't have fully developed vision even when their eyes first open.
While these steps can help you manage the situation at home, it's important to have the puppy examined by a veterinarian. They can provide a thorough assessment and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed. Early intervention can make a significant difference in the puppy's health and development.
